1st OIKONET POSTGRADUATE WORKSHOP

OIKONET is a network of 34 schools of architecture and planning, research groups, professional and community organizations, and local administrations from 25 countries in Europe and around the world. The goal of the network is to promote innovation in the study of dwelling at a global scale by interlinking three areas: pedagogy, research and community participation. Through the activities developed in the last three years with the support of the Lifelong Learning Programme of the European Union, OIKONET has created a platform of collaboration to promote the study of contemporary housing from a multidisciplinary and global perspective by encompassing the multiple dimensions which condition the forms of dwelling in today’s societies (architectural, urban, environmental, economic, cultural and social).
During the last three years, participatory actions and pedagogical and research activities have brought together various stakeholders and disciplines. Some of the most relevant events organized by the network are:
- three international conferences on the theme “Global Dwelling” carried out in Barcelona (2014), Bratislava (2015) and Manchester (2016).
- three international workshops with the participation of students and tutors from the participating schools, dedicated to the analysis of issues related to contemporary dwelling at its various scales in case studies located in Lisbon (2014), Berlin/Cottbus (2015) and Belgrade (2016).
- 15 working meetings dedicated to the debate of issues related to contemporary dwelling with regard to research on housing studies, community participation and pedagogic innovation.
The intensive work developed in the last three years has given rise to numerous reports, publications, blogs and videos which are available in the project website. A book summarizing the network activity of the last three years is being completed and will be released in May 2017.
POSTGRADUATE WORKSHOP
On completion of this learning experience, OIKONET is starting a series of Postgraduate Workshops aimed at bringing together researchers interested in exploring the topic of dwelling in our contemporary societies from a multidisciplinary and multidimensional perspective. The aims of the workshops are:
- to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and experiences among young researchers working in areas related to dwelling in contemporary societies.
- to foster the creation of alliances among researchers and their institutions to continue developing pedagogic and research programs in areas related to contemporary global dwelling.
- to keep developing a framework that brings together pedagogical innovation, housing research and community outreach with the purpose to understand and to give form to contemporary dwelling and building.
Workshop themes and program
The program of the workshop is structured in three sessions:
1. Conceptualizing global dwelling. Guest speaker and moderator: Prof. Leandro Madrazo, School of Architecture La Salle, Barcelona, Spain.
The purpose of this session is to identify the traits that characterize today’s dwelling on a global scale. A first attempt to define the meaning of the expression ‘global dwelling’ might take into consideration the following:
- The existence of common driving forces influencing the contemporary habitat in different cultures, societies and places, among others: gentrification, mobility, sustainability, and economic and social restructuring.
- The recognition that dwelling as a subject-matter inevitably brings together various scales, disciplines, and areas of expertise, including: architecture and urban planning, sociology and community psychology, economics and finance.
- The challenge of adopting inclusive approaches to identify housing needs and to finding appropriate solutions with the joint participation of citizens and experts, community and local representatives, and political and economic organizations
2. Integrating research and pedagogy in the field of housing studies. Guest speaker and moderator: Prof. Flora Samuel, School of Construction Management and Engineering, University of Reading, UK.
The interactions between research activity and pedagogical work can benefit players in both fields and give rise to innovative, cross-disciplinary learning spaces. Some possible effects of these interactions are:
- Establishing pedagogic paradigms such as “research as design”, “design-based research” and “designerly research”, in the academic programs dealing with housing.
- Enabling architecture and urban planning students to acquire and develop their research skills during their studies.
- Identifying the needs of dwellers in our multicultural, mobile and transient societies, in order to provide the appropriate housing provision.
- Creating inclusive learning spaces where experts from various disciplines (from architecture to sociology, and to environmental psychology) participate in defining the issues to be addressed in projects dealing with contemporary housing and dwelling, from the design of residential buildings to territorial and urban planning.
- Identifying the skills and competences that today’s graduates need to have to effectively address the task of giving form to the living environment during their professional practice.
3. Shaping the habitat through community participation. Guest speaker and moderator: Prof. Ognen Marina, Faculty of Architecture, Ss. Cyril & Methodius University in Skopje, Macedonia.
It is widely acknowledged that citizens need to have an active role in the processes of defining their living spaces, at the various scales, from the domestic to the public. This poses some challenges:
- Fostering pedagogic paradigms such as “action learning” and “action research” in the curriculum dealing with housing in the architecture and planning schools.
- Creating spaces of interaction and collaboration between local stakeholders and academic representatives.
- Developing methodologies which facilitate the dialogue and exchange of knowledge between professionals and citizens.
- Training architects and planners with the skills and attitudes that enable them to carry out projects with the participation of non-professionals (co-housing, participatory planning).
Each session will start with a keynote address by an invited speaker (to be announced), followed by the presentations of the selected participants.
Call for papers
Researchers, PhD students and their teachers/tutors are invited to submit an abstract (1 page maximum) positioning their on-going work with regard to the proposed themes. A committee of OIKONET partners will review the submissions and select those to be publicly presented in one of the workshop’s sessions. Please submit your abstract to before Tuesday, May 2, 2017. Selected abstracts will be announced on May 17, 2016.
Authors of the selected abstracts will submit a 6-8 pages paper before the start of the workshop. The papers will be compiled in an on-line publication which will be available in the OIKONET website after the workshop.
Authors of non-selected abstracts will be invited to present a poster. Likewise, selected papers can present a poster as well.
